That's a wild rabbit hole. There was another contemporary historian that also documented it. Seek and you will find brother.
While you're at it, look up the 1797 painting titled "Lucifer summoning his legions." Spot on match for the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty is complete with broken chains at the base.
