People have been calling out the B.S state of the Job Market for a while now. And how reality doesn’t jive with the statements of Corporations and the ‘Small Business Owners’ they have give statements on the news. So it doesn’t surprise me there’s something at work behind the scenes.
Half wonder if that’s why like every roofing company and Landscaping outfit is mostly Hispanic now. With a token old white dude as the foreman. And we’re just told it’s because no White People wanted the Jobs.
But yeah. Companies put out ads for positions they have no intention of hiring for. To bank applications to have their pick of the litter in case a job opens up later.
HR Departments use so many god damn filters. That unless you use the exact keywords. There’s little hope of anyone human actually seeing your application. And they change filter programs periodically so what keywords work can change periodically setting you back to square one.
Quite a few places are expecting schools whether it’s trade schools or conventional institutions to produce people with the equivalent of several years of on the Job experience. Instead of entry level inexperienced people. Removing any responsibility on their part to do any sort of on the job training or allow for an adjustment period. I don’t care how fancy the school is. If the hire was trained on maintaining the newest cutting edge equipment in your industry. And the crap you hired them to maintain and repair is from 1985. With a software backend written in a coding language all of 3 people in the country still know. They’ll either need some on the job training or an adjustment period to learn to figure it out.
And now you can get strange looks if you show up to the front door application in hand. Instead of applying via online portal.
Hell. Even some “Hiring Fairs” now just serve as glorified walkthroughs for filling out an online application. With no one there who can actually interview prospective applicants.
College Degrees are mandatory to even be considered for so many positions in practice. Even if the Company claims otherwise on paper. And it doesn’t even need to be a degree passingly relevant to the job. Just a Bachelors in something. Why? Why is that necessary? The Job is moving data from one fucking excel spreadsheet to different spreadsheet. Why do you need a bachelors?
And then there’s so many College Classes you are mandated to take and pay for out of pocket to get your certificate or degree that don’t actually contribute anything to your career or life. You just need to take them To ensure you are a ‘Well rounded person’. I count on 2 hands with fingers left over. The number of Teachers and Professors I had who actually gave a shit about their students outside of the hours they were being paid to care and tried to structure their classes in a way that the student could find a use for it outside class.
And then once you actually get a degree. Someplaces even it’s for an entry level job in your field won’t hire you as you are ‘Overqualified’.
Unions can vary depending on the region. But in my area. Apprenticeships are offered sparingly and are more or less for friends and family of Union members in Good standing only. And you still need multiple letters of recommendation from members in good standing even if you are a family member or friend of a current member.
