You can throw all the money in the world at the American public education system and nothing will ever improve. The problem is not a lack of money and it definitely isn't a lack of technology. The problem is societal and cultural, and it all starts in the home. And I say this as a teacher. Yeah, we're screwed.
This may be my last year. I changed schools to give it one more shot, and two weeks in, I'm already losing my mind. I'm nowhere near retirement, but I will not make it another twenty years in this profession. I need to just start over. Teaching has become a nightmare.
There are a lot of good opportunities for former teachers. Upon my retirement, I started my own tutoring business using social media for free advertising. I am now in demand, working more hours than when I was working full time, and with my pension, making more than my last year. At your present age, I know a lot of teachers who quit after 10+ years and are now in management or ownership of small businesses in my county.
Thank you for the encouragement. I may be asking you for more advice at some point. I think most teachers feel like there are no other options and just suffer through it. But I need a new path. Glad to hear you have found success!
I always liked the Mark Twain quote, paraphrasing, “If they ever start teaching my books in schools, I lost.”
Now, not only have they taught them, but they’ve banned them!
Speaking of attacking the dead, we need to work on bloodying up John, “Son of Cain” McNoName”s “good name” to a bloodier pulp than Benedict Arnold’s currently has.

I agree. The kids I taught in SY19-20, my last year, were not the same type of kids I taught in SY79-80, my first year.
