Agree with op and want to point out that distractions can be useful. People are curious enough to look at the "cat" videos - it is not about them believing that critters are getting eaten - they will hear from and (hopefully) relate to the real stories of these small town people being over run with illegal migrants and the effect on everything from housing, local services, schools, health, safety, etc. and know that enough is enough.
