You've absolutely nailed what I'm searching for, but you put it into far better words than I could have. Seriously.
I only know of three things.
Humans, but an understanding of the use of adrenochome. Think human sacrifices on top of an Aztec temple. They never went away. Adrenochrome was discovered and has continued to be used because of its effects. As an atheist, this is by far my preferred explanation. Dracula anyone?
This is how this is divulged/explained in an indirect way in a movie/TV.
A Sarcophagus is based on the Ancient healing device technology. It can heal all illness and damage done to the body, but can not (according to Jacob Carter/Selmak) repair extensive brain damage. Using it very occasionally produces no ill effects.
However, when using regularly, especially when unneeded, the psychological side effects can include megalomania and intense notions of superiority.
Read the last quote again. This explains so much of why people would do something like this. This explains why they view themselves as gods.
(I came to this conclusion independent of all other sources. I knew what I was looking for by watching Stargate and managed to google it. I nearly fell out of my chair.)
Aliens. I don't like this one, but it is possible. Aliens feeding off of humans. Memory serving, in "The Hidden" an alien shoves a needle into a human's head in order to extract an important fluid. I may have been wrong about the movie, but I do remember the scene in a movie. Also, Jupiter Ascending is full of this. An entire planet to feed on the lifeforce (best word I can come up with at the moment) of humans. This may just be a theatrical version of #1.
Spirits. As an atheist, I really don't like this one as I don't believe in the supernatural. In order to manifest themselves in a physical form, demons need blood/flesh of humans.
I wonder if there's something to the black eye club, apophis glowing eyes and adrenochrome... I've read the black eye is a reaction to taking too much...
Yeah - Unfortunately to solve the riddle of WTF is really going on - holding that up against "99% in the hospital" - you have to walk into some shitty neighborhoods looking for the answer that scratches the itch.
Your advantage in seeking is your core isn't holding you back from looking with a religious leash...
The problem is ... once you know truth, you can't unknow it ... and ignorance certainly is bliss. However some of us assholes just "gotta know" because knowing just won't leave us the hell alone... like a splinter you just gotta
