Ive owned land in this area for decades. Camp Grayling isnt a base in the classic sense. As you can see on the thumbnail it is the Joint Maneuver Training Center. All summer long NG from various States deploy here and do their two weeks. We watch the convoys moving north along our interstates from June to September.
The land over most of the northern Lower Peninsula is sand. It is low here too with many large swamps some of which can be measured in the square miles. There are what we call 'tank trails' all over. These are unimproved roads (mostly sand) that the county doesnt service and is used by the military for maneuvers and the locals too as short cuts. Its almost all State Land up here or Manistee National Forest.
There are a few live fire ranges.
Two stories:
When I was a kid we went and stayed at my friends dads land on the Au Sable. We went four wheeling in his Dads Bronco when a NG helicopter landed in front of us and told us to vacate because live fire was about to begin on the nearby range. Well the Bronco got stuck in the sand when we had to stop and it took a bit to dig us out.
One year when we owned land in Waters there was a NG live fire range about a mile away. One night they had night time exercises. Machine guns, artillery and bombs, jets flying over all night long. It was like we were in a war zone.
So for context, there is ease of access and movement in this area. There isnt a central base they are spying on like say Fort Bragg or even the NG base at Selfridge on Lake St. Clair. The NG is spread out over a large area, many 10s of square miles at least of swampy wilderness, conducting mostly small unit maneuvers in aged military equipment. Definitely not our top line stuff.
And short distance from the battery plant is relative. Camp Grayling is in Grayling Michigan. The battery plant is near Big Rapids. They are 105 miles apart.
Thank you for some perspective. I’m still concerned that the Chinese are still putting businesses here in America. I can only hope that EO’s 13818 and 13848 come into play and these wind up being new American assets.
