You need to read with some circumspection. Jesus was directing his scorn at the Pharisees, not the Jewish people. Time has passed, and the Pharisees as a class are a different matter, and now the Jews have their own government, not subject to the Romans. Moreover, the Jews did NOT CALL THEMSELVES "God's chosen people." That was God speaking to the Jews through the prophets. Christians are even more "God's chosen people," through baptism and Christ's sacrifice and resurrection.
I am sorry for your family history. I have some inkling of what that can lead to. I'll leave it at that.
Yes I totally agree with you, he was talking to the Pharisses, not the average Jew. I find problems with some things that has been traditional Bible teaching...like "chosen people", animal sacrifice at any time in history, raising dead bodies, demons in pigs....however I do understand each one, but it's not taught properly...the word of God is only understood by the holy spirit, common sense. BTW today my daughter is 45yr old, she was 9wks old when she nearly died. She and her awesome husband have a painting business today!

We may differ on some of these points, but I am glad to hear that your daughter and husband live in the sunlight of their time.
What a nice comment, thank you so much Friend. God Bless you and yours.
