The citizens give them their job, aka employer! In this age of instant communication, there should be a website, where the employer; citizen can see how every cent is spent! Simple as that! Complete transparency! What we have as politicians is that once elected they are now in a position where the citizens revere them! Politicians are put there to serve not to dictate and rule! Once people understand this, the game is over!
