It's not so much aligning, I think. More of a persuasion thing.

Also, The Russians think that Zelensky is not legitimately the president of Ukraine - and they will need to hold elections before a proper one is elected again. Know that there is a Ukrainian law against negotiating with Russia. So that means the negotiating will have to be done by USA.

The aim is to save lives at this point.
