Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Rules For the rest of the Site also accessible on the sidebar.

I've always wondered what the best tax to keep would be. I think I've finally reached a conclusion.
Abolish all taxes... except sales tax for goods purchased at huge chains. You can pay an extra 5-10% for the convenience of shopping at wal-mart or safeway or best buy.
This would generate a fair bit of income, even the playing field for smaller businesses... and the best part is, it's a relatively simple tax.
Thoughts?
This is just a thought, but I’d like for there to be a way to sign up for taxes voluntarily.
Every item would have to be pre-funded, potentially with even excess funding in case of issues to ensure completion (if there was danger or blight or excess waste caused by incompletion), everyone can use what’s built with these funds, but only people who sign on get hit with supporting the cost, or perhaps people who vote against it are able to opt out.
Instead of going to some polling location, and knowing there is an election, we should get hit with everything that has been proposed, and be able to support or denounce every viable proposal, who is running them, what the plans are, etc.
We need some way of being able to check up on all our different levels of government to give direct buy-in, opposition, or consensus demands.
Get something like that in play, and the representative might just need to be the guy putting together proposals and planning and running any projects.
Would be interesting to see what the downsides of a system like this might be.
All commerce can be taxed and one would argue that this is necessary regardless of the scale of the operation.
Once you have no income taxes, even if there is 20-30% sales tax, it doesnt really cause much of a burden.
Example: You earn 100K, and then purchase 20K worth of goods. Lets compare:
With income tax 25% and no sales tax:
100K - 25K (taxes) - 20K (purchase price) = 55K is what you have remaining.
With no income tax and with 25% sales tax:
100K - 20K (purchase price) - 5K (sales tax) = 75K is what you have remaining.
Huge difference. Anyone will be able to afford even 30% sales tax as long as there is no income tax.
How about abolish all tax for everyone except democrats. I would vote for that.
