They may be able to tell you all about Marcus Licinius Crassus and his relationship to Caesar, Sulla and the Roman Empire but they are seldom able to work anything out for themselves. They know what was in the books but they are often not able to join any dots for themselves.
Many just read a pile of stuff and then regurgitate it when they feel it is appropriate. On the other hand, some people can think their own way through new problems and have no need to speak Latin or Greek to help them do that. Musk falls into this latter category.
