That was a very old lion, no doubt feeling ill and weak. That's why the hyenas felt safe to surround him, thinking he'd be easy to pick off.

Only when the younger lion came in did the hyenas run.

Me too! I watched a documentary once about a male lion watching his young. The hyenas came to try to take a cub. That lion smacked one of their heads off his shoulders. It was vicious and final. The other hyenas ran away.
