Obstructive usually comes with obesity or some issue in the throat and/or nasal
area.
Central can happen to anyone. Your brain either sends bad signals or no signals to the muscles that control breathing and you just stop. You can die from this out of the blue.
By the way - both types lead to many other medical issues if left untreated. When you are tired all the time because you never get into REM sleep you gain more weight, you get high blood pressure, your blood tests are always bad, you get type-2 diabetes, and things keep progressively getting worse and worse. Head-aches, brain fog, falling asleep at work, car wrecks, depression/anger - it messes with almost everything.
If you have sleep apnea and your CPAP isn't working, ask your doc about either an APAP (AutoPap) or a BiPAP. A lot of people can't handle the CPAP since it "constantly" blows air. BiPaP and APAP have low and high pressure settings that are prescribed by the doc and leads to less "fighting against the machine" and better treatment. You may also need a different mask.
Definitely obesity. The thing is - some of the actual diseases can help cause obesity as well. If you get one of the diseases you will generally get others and it is a vicious circle.
Obesity isn't always just caused by failure to stop eating either. With all the crap in our food, and the over-processing and other methods of creation/preparation it is surprising anyone is still a normal weight. High-fructose corn syrup is one of the worst. Also if someone is poor they stand far more of a chance of being obese because of the food they can afford.
Something else people forget about - kids inactivity. Kids used to play outside all the time, and they played sports in school, and were always doing something. They used to have actual recess in school where they played on the merry-go-round, see-saw, or played tag. Now it isn't safe for kids to play outside in many places, schools don't want to be sued for playground injuries, sports now cost a fortune for physicals, equipment, even dresses and such for cheerleading. Kids now live on social media and video games. It all adds up. They grow up, maybe go to college, and get a desk job where they never move.
If RFK Jr. doesn't get things going in the right direction it will continue to get worse and worse until our expected lifespans drop 20 or 30 years.
There are 2 types - Obstructive and Central.

Thanks your detailed educated response. What would you attribute the 400% increase in Sleep Apnea o er the last few Decades?
