What the hell is a "lactation consultant"?
https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/22106-lactation-consultant. Another unnecessary service for moms. Look up Doula…. You essentially hire some stranger to do “dad” work. Might stem from the “everyone gets a trophy” folks we’ve created. Millennials have trouble handling stressors.
I don't disagree with doula peeps. My mother had a lady who lived-in and helped with everything for my younger brothers. Dads may not always be around in a functioning family. They will be busy making money. So mums sits at home, breast-feeding, changing nappies and burping baby. But the most important part is feeding, often. And of course, breast-feeding tends to conk out the mothers, if they are not fed themselves. So mum may be half-asleep most of the time, from doing that 24/7. There will be chores that someone should do. Many. many. A baby will mean washing machine should be going all day long, for example. They poop, All. The Time.
Then there is the household cooking and eating drama. Dishes pile up. Dad could do them when he comes home (after doing the shopping), but he will be tired, and may believe that Mum is just sitting around 'doing nothing' judging by the state of the house.
So, if someone else can come in and bring a little sanity in those early years, I think that's great.
I believe that is the cattle farmers daughter who consults the newly hired illegal on how to milk a cow...
Is this where the traveling salesman comes in
No. That happens when you are trying to watch your favorite sportsball team on the tube.
Heheh, probably.
A Lactation Consultant is an individual, (often a Dietician, Pharmacist, RN or physician, but not always), who has increased education in assessing the breastfeeding dyad and provides hands on assistance, verbal assistance and a plan, in conjunction with the family unit and physicians. The focus is on breastfeeding position of the mother/infant couplet, infant mouth structure and suck, and maternal health as it directly impacts the infant’s nutritional intake. The IBCLC’s credentialing is for an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, who has further lactation education re. anatomy, physiology, positioning, frequency, etc. as it impacts on maternal milk production and infant intake. For the IBCLC, the same exam is administered worldwide. The Lactation Consultant interacts with the mother-infant couplet, pediatricians and obstetricians to optimize a successful breastfeeding experience for both the mother and infant and to meet the goals of all involved.
I bet it is hands-on assistance.
I'm starting to think I missed my calling.
Ah, I knew that an answer would be forthcoming from the great autistes here on GAW. Thanks.
