That post has me seriously thinking that the precipice might involve Syria and not, as I thought, Ukraine.
Isn't it interesting that this should happen just before Trump gets in.
edit. in answer to the posts i think that in "the sum of all fears" that the nuclear material came from Syria (maybe the Golan Heights ) and it was an Israeli nuclear bomb that had landed but not detonated.
That's interesting. I have had a mental note running about some stolen nook material that was purportedly going to Israel.
The Golan Heights would have been perfect for hiding it.
I also agree that Assad out of the country means something bad is going to happen, probably a partitioning, whereby Turkey, Israel et al. will claim pieces, just as Ukraine is going to be divided up. Note that Israel has plans to broaden their buffer-zone around the Golan Heights, almost as if they were trying to prevent someone from stealing their precious <speculation.
But Assad always strove to keep Syria together, and secular. He cannot be blamed. And that is interesting, in terms of what happens next. He does have Putin's friendly hand.
Ukraine is definitely part of the greater picture, however. Think of it as Greater Israel (Part Zero, i.e. before 1947): 20% of Israelis speak Russian. Ukraine is where they lived and brewed up new ways to get even, because Bolsheviks were persona non-grata - just a little too brutal - killing the Romanovs for example... When the Nazis came to Ukraine, they welcomed them with open arms as liberators from ebil Stalin. Of course, the Red Army did the thing they were best at. But then there were the subversive elements left behind, still living in the USSR. One of Stalin's prolly not great propositions was to move Jews (Bolsheviks) from Ukraine, which was very much like Syria, in that it was a patchwork of populations. It was a form of ethnic cleansing, I suppose, but there was so much killing at the time, that noone cared anymore. One could easily compare it with a drive to get criminals off the streets.
There was one Oblast in Eastern Siberia where Jews could go, or they could just leave, 'escape' to the West, or be taken prisoner and be sent to Gulags.
So a bunch of them moved to the newly formed Israel. Not saying that all of those Jews were Bolsheviks - in fact prolly the Russian-speakers are the saner ones in Israel, now.
Trying to suss out Jewish history as always been a challenge because of the diaspora and because of the frank lying about their identity that was driven by the failing to integrate into any place they ever went. They formed colonies, did their own thing, and often ended up in conflict with the native populations who got tired of them and kick them out. That's not to say that Jews were always bad, deserved what they got, or failed to contribute. It's obviously more complicated than that, but this particular history means that clean and precise, well-preserved records of their history are hard to find sometimes. You have to rely on their own rabbis' records which are obviously biased.
Anyway, it's important history to know. After the Roman empire, many Jews spread out across the Mediterranean, but a large nexus of them formed among the Khazars, an aggressive trading empire in central Asia and Eastern Europe. These people converted to Judaism (the Ashkenazi ones), so they're ethnically distinct from the Jews of Judea (the Sephardic ones). The ones we're dealing with right now in Ukraine, the ones who came up with Marxism in Vienna, Austria, the ones who fomented communism in Russia and who committed some of the worst atrocities ever seen on this planet where the ancestors of the Khazars. The ones who fled Russia and ended up in New York are also from this group and are predominantly Ashkenazi). Just as a curiosity, Latin America is full of Sephardic Jews with actual genetic ties to Judea. They were driven out of Europe during the Inquisition and became the "conversos" (forced to convert to Catholicism to save their hides), and many ended up in New Spain or pirating around the Caribbean. Yes, many of the famed pirates were Jewish, and so were the ship owners that ran the Atlantic slave trade.
When you hear on this website "we're saving Israel for last," a lot of this hidden history is why. It's an absolutely deadly third rail to talk about with some people.

That's a whole lot of stuff there I wasn't aware of. Thank you.
