  • Royal Assent: Every Canadian federal law requires royal assent to become law.

  • Process:

    1. Bill passes House of Commons and Senate.
    2. Governor General grants royal assent on behalf of the Crown.
    3. Royal assent is ceremonial and can be done in a ceremony or by written declaration.

  • Role Today:

    • Symbolic and required by Canada’s constitutional monarchy.
    • Monarch/Governor General has no real power to refuse assent.

  • Impact: Once royal assent is granted, the bill becomes law.
