Nobody wants to talk about the gorilla in the bathtub: Quebec. Talk about assimilation problems. Canada minus Quebec might be a feasibility.
To be honest, I think it is a terrible idea. It is like thinking the only way the world should work is if everyone is a U.S. citizen. Canada has a perfectly respectable history of development in the spheres of humanities, science, and engineering. We did them a very nasty turn by destroying their highly advanced aircraft industry so we could sell them Bomarc missiles. Their political history is much different from ours, with no common points. They would need to abrogate the political connection to the British Crown in order for any of this to happen---but if they can do that, they would also be on a path of true independence, and I believe that would be better FOR THEM. I've grown up to see what happens when the U.S. throws its weight around in the world, and I am not happy with it. I don't want to see a continuance, especially against a good neighbor.
And I don't want to see a Democrat Party energized by the addition of 9 million Quebecois. I am concerned that we are in danger of losing our common speech in English by adding a huge Francophone contingent to the Spanish-speaking.
Maybe you could may Quebec an 'unincorporated territory', like Guam. Some of the perks, but essentially no voting rights.
what would be the point in them accepting that?
I have no idea. Perhaps they could simply secede from the current Canada, remain the Canada that Canadians who want, want, and the rest could become states of the US.
But note: DON'T TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY.
