I think CPR training and AED training should be everywhere...as long as it is done correctly. I have been in classes where they give the minimum amount of "training". Most training does not include resuscitation anymore. A lot of training does not cover the fact that most CPR incidents do not revive a person, and that more often than not, ribs are broken during the procedure. Back in the day when resuscitation was still taught and used, many times the result would be the person vomitting. I have personally witnessed this a few times. CPR is not something to engage in unless trained because you can really hurt someone. AED training is fairly simple. The device tells you what to do, and won't deliver a shock unless the patient is hooked up correctly, and is actually suffering from Vfib or Vtac.
CPR capability for kids is important for parent and grandparent health. It is taught to kids as young as 12 per AHA guidelines. I’ve been an AHA BLS and HS instructor for a few years and have taught a few kids that age.
It’s been seen that compression only CPR is more effective than compression/breath CPR. Blood oxygenation is more consistent and it eliminates the hesitance to give breaths to a stranger.
So we want 8th graders evaluating other students to determine they need heart defilibration? Nice. This ought not end we’ll...
That can't happen. Defibrillators monitor the heart rhythm looking for arrhythmias such as r Ventricular Fibrillation (Vfib) or Ventricular Tachycardia (Vtac). If neither is present, the device will not charge to deliver a shock.
Also, if a person is Asystolic (flat line), then a shock will not be delivered either, since it wouldn't help at all (regardless of what hollyweird shows in the movies or on TV)
Had CPR training in high school back in the day. Was well worth it and fortunately nothing happened where I needed to use it. The worst of it is you can be sued even if saving someones life, thanks to our 'injustice' system
