imo, it's been going on since the beginning of time. 'they' used to do it out in the open because it was accepted by many on this earth. but as Christianity spread, people started opposing it and were outraged by it. so instead of them stopping it, they went under ground to continue 'their' evil satanic rituals in the dark, still to this day.
