Because they have been abused by Denmark as I understand it. There are only 60k people in Greenland. Avg. income is about 54k USD. If they became a protectorate and the US paid them for military land lease and mining rights, the people of Greenland would probably receive checks from the USG that would double their annual earnings. Not to mention a boost to tourism. And the guarantee of US military protection, not from a country 1000 miles away with a smaller military than the NC National Guard.
