The switch from MySpace to Facebook was absolutely a gov op. In my opinion the reason why the switch was needed was that MySpace was not set up on the back end to collect information and data like Facebook was (Total Information Awareness project called LifeLog). So Tom was given an ultimatum, sell the company or else. It's also why they purposefully ran myspace into the ground after purchasing it.
Nothing about that switch was natural. There was no reason to make the job to Facebook when it was super rigid and MySpace was so much more customizable.
