I thought it was purple at first, too, but when we finally got a close-up, I could see that it's actually a mix of small red and blue rectangles, resulting in a purple-ish appearance.
It looked like a red and blue flag type tie. I have had one for years.
The color purple has long been associated with sovereignty and royalty due to its historical rarity and cost.
