Good. He went to the same Californian cafe each day to work on Silk Road, one day he logged on without his VPN and they got him.
Had nothing to do with VPNs. VPNs arent fed taskforce proof.
They had a team of undercover agents slowly surround him in a library. Two agents distracted him while another agent grabbed his open laptop, while yet another agent tackled him before he could close the lid and instantly encypt everything.
This is a good recount from someone that actually interviewed Ulbricht before he was arrested.

I think parallel construction was used on him.
A few weeks before he was caught, there was a huge DDOS type attack on various nodes on TOR. Many believe that they DDOS'd certain nodes to force traffic through ones they controlled. That is what was used to figure out who he was.
However, since that is not exactly legal, they then constructed a case backwards to get him. Hence the fake "he was trying to hire a hitman" narrative that died at trial.
wrong, they tracked down an account on hacking forums where he used his personal email to recruit people to his site early on. Silly mistake when he was much younger. Then did the trap in the library when they knew he was logged in and got him.
