I think you mean the Cedar Fire in 2003--I worked in Solana Beach at the time and our school closed for a week due to smoke from the fires inland.
It was the 15 freeway that was crossed, I think. The 5 freeway runs parallel and closer to the coast.
But your point is correct--we had some terrible fires 20 years ago and no brush clearing since with lots and lots of development. The area close to this fire used to be a big golf course--demolished to build homes in the last couple years.
Perhaps not in the scale of homes--but it's hilly and dry brush.
It sure is. Some years ago the fire from that area got so large it jumped the 5.
That is like a 100m jump. Maybe even more.

no apologies--we've had so many fires here in San Diego, it's hard to keep it straight. I've been here 67 years and I've seen too many.
