I think you mean the Cedar Fire in 2003--I worked in Solana Beach at the time and our school closed for a week due to smoke from the fires inland.
It was the 15 freeway that was crossed, I think. The 5 freeway runs parallel and closer to the coast.
But your point is correct--we had some terrible fires 20 years ago and no brush clearing since with lots and lots of development. The area close to this fire used to be a big golf course--demolished to build homes in the last couple years.
Rancho Bernardo ain't no Pacific Palisades.
And it's quite dry in RB, so they do get fires.

It sure is. Some years ago the fire from that area got so large it jumped the 5.
That is like a 100m jump. Maybe even more.
