I love how they call oil a 'fossil fuel', and try to pretend its production ended with the 'dinosaurs'. Every single fucking organic thing produces oil in the process of breaking down after it dies. Including us. Yes, our bodies become oleaginous during the process of putrefaction. Oil is constantly produced by the process of organic things dying.
Same with coal, granted much much slower on the human usability timeframe, but it's still true. Peat however as the midway stage is much quicker and fully exploitable.
I've always hated that tag, and I have a feeling that, during this great awakening and rebirth, that it'll disappear. We are not merely parasites, just sucking resources dry and moving on to the next thing. Well.... most of us, anyway...
Hydrocarbons are naturally produced in the earths crust from elements that are found there in abundance and created by the pressure and conditions present there. Then it seeps through cracks in the earths crust and accumulates in the oil field pockets. Oil is the second most abundant liquid on the planet. They are drilling for oil many miles below the lowest level they ever found a fossil. It’s just more profitable for the oil industry if we pretend it is scarce, so that’s what we are going to do.

Yeah. I listened to some guy who was mentioning the same. I believe he said the correct term is hydrocarbon.
