Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Rules For the rest of the Site also accessible on the sidebar.

Any suggestions on supplements, minerals or herbs to help extremely dry skin. It’s been bad every winter for several years but this year it’s worse. Makes sense with the colder weather we have had. We’ve had mild winters for several years. It’s possibly my age, getting estrogen levels up & environment. I’m not expecting you to solve this. If you use something that works please share. Thanks
Edit: Thank you everyone for your tips. I have learned so much.
Tallow ... I know it sounds odd, but it works. You can also add a drop of your favorite essential oil if you want to smell sweet while moisturizing your skin. Use the tallow sparingly though, because a little goes a long way.
I have tallow I use for cooking. Occasionally I’ll put on my hands. Sounds crazy but sometimes I put butter on my hands and my skin seems to like it better than tallow. I don’t like tallow on my face. I should get a good quality tallow with essential oils added. Thanks for reminding me of this great resource.
I just got a sample of whipped tallow, gift from a fren, and I'll definitely be buying some - it's light and fluffy white, has no smell, and started fixing my cracked skin right away. I've got some aloe vera powder and other things I'm going to mix with it. But I agree, first get your insides right. Also, there may be another factor involved, for example allergy to wool or the dry heat in your room (humidifier)
If it’s whipped probably has shea butter in it. Possibly more butters or carrier oils, they usually don’t have a scent other than natural scents. Shea butter and mango butter are great. There’s lots of plant butters available. I’m looking for a blend I like and really don’t want to have to make it. I need to reorder aloe, I’m running low. I’m pretty sure the major factors are the cold weather and low humidity in my house from running heat 24/7. Won’t get better here till March or mid April. My house is cinder block & holds cold & heat, even on warm days need heat. Probably bigger factor is hormone levels (working on that).
