Curious about the context. I know that as a long lad I definitely got myself into a lot of trouble on the internet, and I was definitely looking for trouble.
Was there parental controls?
Was he supervised?
Did anyone guide him to it or did he find it on his own?
All important questions. A kid can get into a lot of trouble with just 5 minutes and an unsupervised internet connection.
Sounds like it was a failure in the parental controls to catch the site. One of the kids found out about it, and told he others. Once kids realize they can get by the parental controls, they'll tell each other and everyone's gonna want to try it.
Sounds exactly like what my rascal of a younger self would have done.
If you listen to the news video, the kids said other students told him about the site.
It's during school hours, who is leaving them unsupervised?
It's in a school laptop, who is leaving the parental guards off?
The school system ignored the parents and eventually got back to the reporter with sing and dance about adult sites constantly evolving to evade blocks. BS. They shouldn't be blocking them one by one, they should be paying for a proper guard, ot denying all and letting only a few in, or NOT USING THE LAPTOPS AT ALL.
Also, dumb parents. If other students are teaching your kid about porn sites, what else are they teaching him? Get out of public schools. Homeschool, if you care about their souls.

According to the school, they have software installed against this.

Definitely. Unfortunately porn is pervasive on the net: even if you're not looking it's just a typo away. And boys will often look.
