Same happens in Firefox unless "pop-up windows" are disabled ... so one opens as a normal tab and the duplicate opens as a "pop-up", although the result is the same for both (new tab).
As long as I remember, I can click anywhere on the 𝕏weet other than "Show more" and it opens once in a new tab, so no biggie, just puzzling :)
My setup isn't that different to yours, I am using Brave on a variant of Ubuntu. The only difference is that I don't have an X account right now so "Show more" isn't an option for me.
So this only happens in embedded tweets and not if the tweet url is used directly?
Not an image but, even so, I've never seen an image open in two tabs.
The example is from the OP we're commenting in (click "Show more"):

Correct and I'm also on a variant -- Kubuntu.
We don't have control over the Javascript files and the tech guys on scored are not responsive to us so our ability to fix issues is quite limited.
Okies - Thanks for responding 👍
