If Japan's imperial expansion was part of WW2, that definitely didn't start in Europe, and it started in 1931, well before Hitler took any territory outside of Germany. So it kind of depends on how you define the start of a war.
And it kind of depends on whether Japan taking adjacent countries constitutes a world war as opposed to major aggression in a region.
I see your point, but I think most people think of Hitler's blitzkrieg in Europe started the world war. I guess, going full circle, Japan's attack on the US made it truly global as we declared war the next day.
I still think Churchill and FDR had more to do with allowing the attack on Pearl Harbor, than anything. There is a reason why every single aircraft carrier was safely out to sea and out of harm's way. That attack was needed to change the will of the American people from strictly isolationist to ready for all out war.
