Tomato juice was used by early Hollywood to simulate blood. Up until Psycho came out. Hitchcock thought about using tomato juice but said that since Psycho was filmed in black/white, chocolate syrup looked more like blood's sticky consistency than tomato juice, so he decided on it instead of tomato juice.
