I think they were pumping oxygen in, and most vids show the men mask-less, although some succumbed to gas-inhalation. In the early food stocking/toilet installation stage, the dive-suits were needed. <IMO
That's so they didn't get the xfiles black oil on them... otherwise krycheck has to drain his face out at the UFO...
