OK but instead of this arrangement, why not make Greenland a US territory like Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, etc.?
That would be IMHO more in accord with Trump's statement that "For our own national security and that of the world, the United States considers ownership and control of Greenland an absolute necessity."
An independent Greenland is ripe for takeover. They have no infrastructure, no warfighting force, no equipment, can't do jack crap to defend themselves against a hostile major power. If Greenland is America, then "Make it so, Number 1."
That's what they voted against. They voted for independence to negotiate. A good sign but no one wants to be a US territory. Being a US territory doesn't help the people of Greenland anymore than being the Danish territory they are now. Giving them independence is important to make them a successful partner.
