Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Rules For the rest of the Site also accessible on the sidebar.

I had less than a 1/4 acre in the city when I started my first bird operation. 8x6 coop and 6x20 yard on the side of my house.
Well, that gives me hope I might one day have a paltry poultry plot of my own!
Go for it. 3-4 hens, I engineered some feeders from salvaged pvc from the jobsite, built the coop out of pallets, started throwing my kitchen scraps out there. I was maybe fifty bucks into my first operation and within a couple months was having to give away eggs. Didn't even ask for money but people started feeling guilty and returning my cartons back with cash inside. All I do is top off their feed, rinse out their water and change out their sawdust every couple months. It's a 2 minute chore each morning I've grown to enjoy. Make coffee, say hi to my girls, grab their eggs and go on with my day.
It's a free and rewarding hobby I'll do the rest of my life. The neighbor hucks his kitchen scraps over the fence for them, widow across the street sent me home with freezer burned blueberries for them the other day, I go fishing and toss fish heads in their pen... they're basically little dinosaurs that eat anything and shit out delicious protein. It warms up a little more and I'll turn them loose in the garden after I rototill. No bug or weed stands a chance with those bitches scratching around fertilizing as they go aerating before I plant.
That really doesn't sound too bad!
Do you have a rooster? Not sure my neighbors would appreciate cock-a-doodle-doos at dawn!😄
Are egg-laying hens good to eat after their egg laying days are done, or do you need a different breed for meat?
Sorry, but I couldn't resist, this one's for the chickens 🐔 😄:
