It's preddy LOL the way politicians try to regulate the masses. The intital concern has blown into climate change weeds, so that peeps wanna ban cookin wid gaz.
There is some legitimate concern raised recently, from the NZ Plumbing and Gasfitters association:
9Kg bottled gas bottles do not really have enough oomph to drive anything. Most califonts, for example, require bigger bottles. It's OK for LOL camping, but a 9kg bottle will not drive a modern 4 burner, for example. It's in the manufacturer's specs. So, one should use 45Kg bottles, [science-nerd trigger] something to do with the warm atmosphere and the surface area of the steel bottle 'warming' the gas and effectively boiling it, so that gas gains pressure from the temperature exchange. If the surface area on the bottle is not great enough, the gas will burn inefficiently, make thick, yellow, sooty flames, dirty all your pots (and clothes, and hands), and worst of all: make Carbon Monoxide (CO) - which builds up in blood, so repeated exposure makes one very ill, or even dead.
The same argument is against cheap cast-iron rings, which should only be used outside because of the CO. So, the problem is that it is the most vulnerable, poor peope that end up taking a short-cut and using a 9kg bottle and a gas ring to at least cook some food. Often those precarious people do not have a choice, because no electicity - say post fire- or storm-drama.
To Make America Healthy Again, legislators should offer incentives (i.e. tax-rebates when applying with the council for the well-advertised upgrade), to purchase a legitimate, healthy set-up. Gas itself is a great, Green resource. Residents using it, must have piped gas or a seismically strapped (when appropriate) 45Kg bottle, a regulator and the appropriate manufacter guaranteed fittings. Plus a CO detector/alarm in the kitchen.
Thus, to implement such a healthy policy, city and county building departments must control these tiny consents (and rebates) and accept gasfitter's certificates. Fine, if one uses software, BTW. Also good politically, because it is 'giving back' to the community, while targetting the most vulnerable, without doing DEI-stuff. Also such a policy effectively morphs the Frankenstien Monster that this Gas argument has become.
Very informative comment, thank you. I don't camp, but my stove is gas and my backyard grill that used propane tanks, has been defunct for years, so TIL!
Well defunct-ness could be explained by the fact that 9kg bottles tend to crap out at about half-full (because of lack of pressure) , so you keep having to refill them to run that barbie. Some gas-stations do not refill anymore, they only do swappa-bottle, so one tends to lose money that way too.
Yeah, I used to get them refilled until the place by me closed, then I had to do the Blue Rhino swappa-bottle. Still have a couple out back from when the grill died.
No the swappabottles are a ripoff. Because there will always be some left in the tank. Can you get the 45 kg bottles? Companies do delivery services for that sort of thing - one needs a truck to move them.
I suppose it will all come back bright and shiny, soon. My son recently installed a super-duper smart grill that smokes and slow-cooks and everything. Gotta have a look at the developments there, my fren - the new grills are waaaay better than the old ones. Meats are out of this world, tender and juicy and just the right amount of red.
