It was to protect you from any falling building structure, ceiling materials, lights, etc. It's still good advice. We had to use it during the Nisqually Earthquake in 2001. Various buildings suffered plumbing damage and one laboratory building was so structurally damaged that it was stricken off as unrepairable.
I did that through 3rd grade. It seemed ridiculous since our class was on the 3rd floor.
