Yep the claim that they destroy them is all a lie.
President Trump has to ban gun buyback programs in this country. Predictability, liberals will howl.
I need a gun buyback near my house before they do that, although I live in Texas so that is unlikely (I'm not in or near any of the blue cities).
Those buybacks usually only give the person a grocery gift card for like $50-$100 for the gun they turn in. If you walk up to the people in line and offer them even the same amount, but in cash, they will sell it to you instead. In most states this is legal - nothing they can do about it. It is a private sale. Even if I did it and a cop tried to stop me, I would just pull out my concealed card to show I've already been through the background checks (which again aren't required in most states for a private sale). They would grumble but that's all they could do.
I would recommend being picky about who you buy from though. Look for some old lady that is selling her dead husband's gun.
Cops also know people buy and sell ARs outside of gun shows (in the parking lots) all the time and they never do or say anything about it.
