Having a .gov email address isn't all that prestigious. Hell, I had a .gov address at one point.
There's something like 11,000 different .gov domains. Obviously the big ones are the Federal agencies, and the White House, but then you get all the county/city/state domains as well.
You can be some rinky dink secretary to social workers out in Nowhere, USA, and you'll get a .gov email address.
But why would you sign up using a .gov email for social media unless you were performing a duty of job in gov during use of the social media? I can see being suspicious about that. I mean really, how many email services are there for private citizen use, free, no less?
Well, first if all, is it true that some of the mods there actually have valid, working .Gov email addresses?
You've taken it as a given that this is true based on what? Some stranger on the internet saying they "apparently" did?
Second, to give people the impression that whatever job they were doing on that site was at the behest of the government...just as you've claimed. It gives them the illusion of legitimacy and authority that a Gmail (or god forbid a yahoo or hotmail) account would not give.
You pretty much answered your own question.
Basically, someone wanted to seem more important than they would have been without a .gov address. Ego is a huge motivation for doing that type of thing. And mods aren't typically known for being meek little humble people...
You can't be both meek and a mod. You should see the abuse we take from the shills and trolls. You have to have a thick skin for this job and be able to wield a hammer.
Ooh, so I assumed this person wasn't lying. Wow, guess I committed a crime for having an opinion. Wtaf? It's a question and an opinion, no fucking big deal. Good grief, you're fucking ridiculous.
And every employer knows that employees ignore their directives to not use work email for personal use.
Hell, Hillary Clinton got raked through the coals for personal emails she sent from her government account. Do you not remember that?
And as a one time government employee, who spent a hell of a lot of time with other government employees, I can tell you from personal experience that it happens frequently.
But I guess you would know more about it than I would, and I should just take the words of some stranger over my own experience. ๐
If your point is that .gov people are often useless or at least careless youโve made it.
From over here in private work itโs a security breach waiting to happen, a quick ride to the do-not-promote list, and a faster ride out if the lapse leads to a phish or other incident.

Name checks out, lol.

That's usually the qualifier on this board, yeah.
All it takes is a tweet and people wil lsay "this makes sense" and pass it on as truth .
Yeah. It's pretty damn concerning how prevalent that is.
..on the internet, anyway

Well, you know what they say about people who assume things. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
But this being an elite research board, perhaps just assuming things like that isn't the best approach...
Why are you getting so defensive?
We always call out the glow boys & Elgin Air Force base.
BS. Every employer drills it into employeesโ heads not to use work email for social purposes.
The only reason to use the .gov is because itโs for work purposes.
There was one result for 4chan in the USAID database that showed a $1.5M payment to astroturf there.

Well, yes, 100%. Government employees are frequently fuck ups. Using work emails for non-work situations are just the norm with them.
I have gotten a giggle about how many people here thinks government employees are all fine, upstanding, rule following professionals. ๐
Prestigious??? Glowing
What?
Not supposed to be used for unofficial use.
"Not supposed to" =/= "not done"
It's hysterically funny how people suddenly have so much faith in government employees following rules/not being generally retarded.
