I also agree with the stark meanings of words, and get impatient with those who have to dance around plain meaning. I think some of it has to be linked with a reluctance to "get real" and face unpleasantness. It is almost an art form in Zambia, where the way you describe something is more important than what you have described (depending on whose feathers are ruffled). Come to think of it, that may also characterize British high society, where circumlocutions and euphemisms abound. It is also an element of common politeness. We say "oh, he's gone to the restroom" instead of "yeah, he's taking a shit." Maybe it is to avoid distasteful imagery. Some images cannot be unseen, even if they are imaginary!
