The Bill of Rights 1689 clearly states that the UK Monarch has to defend Anglicanism and the Protestant faith if they are to be eligible to the Throne of Great Britain.

If he has departed from the faith he is not lawfully allowed to be our King.

Charles said years ago, on video, that he wanted to be simply "Defender of Faith" instead of "Defender of THE Faith." And it looks like that's exactly what he's doing.
