I'm with you, doug. I don't care for being called a member of a cult. But, I guess that makes Jesus the cult leader. And preaches love and forgiveness and to live your life according to Jesus's teachings. I haven't seen any secret rituals in church. It is best shared in families. I turned away from it as I entered adult life but returned as I had kids of my own to raise. They didn't ostracize me for leaving and welcomed me back with open arms. Not much of a cult. Peter was the first pope, chosen by Jesus to be the leader of the church on earth. And the apostles were given the holy spirit to preach His message and grow His flock. Pretty simple. Can there be bad popes? Sure. They are the same imperfect sinful humans as us.
Peter was not the first pope. The Bible says nothing like that. You are repeating what you have been taught through catholicism. Peter was a disciple who followed Jesus' teachings, and according to the Scriptures, Peter was married. Why would a church be built on a mere man. It is built upon the Rock Jesus Christ who was and is and always will be the Only Begotten Son of the Holy God. The foundation for our faith is built upon the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Don't tell me what I think or why I think it. I don't repeat shit. I have my own mind and my own eyes. I read the Bible on my own to know what it says to me.
Where in the Bible did you read Peter was the first pope? The word pope is not in the Bible. I wasn't trying to offend you, but that is something that is specifically taught by the catholic church. Where did you learn that from reading the Scriptures? It is better to put your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ than in a man or a religion. Thats all I am trying to say. "Great peace have they that love Thy law, and nothing shall offend them."
Jesus said, "And I tell you that you are Peter,[a] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[b] will not overcome it." Peter is Greek for Rock. It is the founding of God's church on earth. The word the title, 'pope' didn't come till long after. The word means 'father' in Greek. It wasn't the title that was given by Jesus. Just the position of leadership to lead His flock on earth.
