Probably something the original pope did/started before they replaced him in 2020(original version of pope was a genuinely good person, which is why they replaced him...), which likely locked the 2.0 into certain actions as a matter of acting like he was the original...

2.0 pope continued legacy of 1.0 pope to appear real and Assange probably benefited from this although that was never their intention, Assange is there keeping up the charade(the show) of gratitude and respect that is likely only directed at the long-dead original pope.
Death provides a good excuse for him to be there at the same time as Trump, which is the real reason for Assange's presence(whether he would even be there If Trump wasn't also there is anybody's guess)
