A return of say a traditionalist hardliner Pope who feels he has a mandate to act to purge corruption and defend the defend something other than the financial and political interests of the Cardinals and his ‘side’ IE exterior backers. Would be something no one has seen in decades. It would certainly shake the Vatican to its core. Lots of the senior Clergy have gotten comfortable, corrupt, and complacent. And it would certainly shake the laypeople.
The Pope also doesn’t necessarily need to be a Cardinal. The only true requirements are they must be a male. 35 years of age minimum. And a Baptized and practicing Catholic. Everything else commonly listed as a ‘requirement’ is more of a preference and deference to tradition rather than a strict requirement. So we Could easily have an unexpected result well outside the realm of expectation. I mean it’s unlikely. But still a possibility.
