Brother-in-law was Navy jet fighter (A6) pilot and captain for American Airlines. Knows a thing or two about thermodynamics in the upper atmosphere.

Contrail duration can be a few seconds to hours. Atmospheric conditions, especially temperature and humidity, determine how long they last. Humidity makes them expand and last longer, up to a full day.
