At the time of Obama's birth, Kenya was still a British possession, not an independent nation. (One might quibble over that terminology, however.) Which would have meant that the United Kingdom could have extended royal influence over Obama, him being half British by birth through his father. (This is an example of why the "natural born citizen" requirement is important.)
