I went on one of the tourist boat rides there in 1964. The announcer on the boat said any boat that got closer than a certain distance would be fired on, but the prison was closed in 1963, so I guess that announcement was just for show :)

Lol. In elementary school we went on yearly field trips there. The "guards" would lock us in the cells. I think SFUSD was training us to get used to being behind bars
