Not necessarily "abroad"...just aboard AF-1. He could be flying to a domestic location, or to a safe harbor... or just keeping in the air sort of like the Strategic Command keeps aircraft aloft 24/7. Does AF-1 have mid-air refueling capabilities?
Going abroad is usually on the POTUS schedule, but perhaps being safely onboard AF-1 is a decision that will be taken without warning to the media or the public.

The current VC-25A's have air to air refueling capabilities. The planned replacement VC-25B's, do not.
That was a surprise to look that "feature" up. I wonder why they dropped this capability.
