I think not. This was so clearly an escalation and provocation, that NATO could not credibly claim they were innocent, if they had their fingerprints on the action. Trump is not so stupid as to be drawn into anything, when there is no reason to become further involved. It has become clear to him that Zelensky wants war, not peace, so he is happy to turn the matter over to Putin, who will give Zelensky what he wants (and how).
The EU has spent too much time admiring itself in the mirror. They don't understand how cynical a view the world has of the "Western" powers, as a fallout from discontent with colonialism and the West's continued corruptive pressure on developing nations. Do you suppose that BRICS has anything to do with Europe? As a result of fairly decent relations with the non-Western world, Russia has an audience that will listen and heed.
Europe can't accept a strong Russia and I draw a lot of parallels with the German strategy in WWII where Russia was the key strategic goal for Germany to secure the resources for their industrialization and lacking the resources themselves. This is Europe's fight for their relevance on the global stage otherwise they enter the dark ages.
I sort of agree, with reservations. HItler was driven by the objective of gaining "lebensraum" for Germanic national expansion, but petroleum and grain were good things to put in the bank.
EU is already descending into the dark ages of population replacement and massive violence, so I don't think they are motivated by any desire to avoid a dark age. (They may be too pathologically insane to realize what that could mean.) I do think they are worried that Russia is firmly outside their orbit of control, which they see (rightly) as a threat to their one-world-ism. But they have no objective assessment of the situation, believing they are stronger than they are, even if desperate plans are undertaken.
Again, America has been seduced by the suck on the European teat. First, Wilson---then FDR---and all the NATO posturing. I agree that Trump needs to pull out of NATO. The EU thinks that NATO membership is enslavement.
Russia expressed interest to join NATO and were denied but that may not be seen as Russia trying to enter the sphere of influence as it depends on the terms. But Russia was suspended from the BIS and I'm sure that is a concern to be outside that sphere of influence and there is history there as the BIS was a key part in the Russian default in 98.
I totally believe the EU believes they are stronger than they are or they have no othe path but to double down. The reason the EU even exists is the European elite thought they thought they could create a union to rival the US to replace the US reserve currency upon it's collapse to keep their wealth intact. That plan failed to ever get off the ground - the main Central Banks were way overleveraged and having to deal with the debt levels from the PIIGS and they were really pissed about Brexit.
