It is easy to criticize your forebearers whilst reaping the benefits of their actions. Yes, war is shit and innocents often are killed. I am not approving of or condoning their actions because the situation was not as black and white as you believe it. If you do a little studying on the war in the Pacific, you will learn why Americans called the Japanese "Dirty Japs." Look into the Rape of Nanjing. It is estimated 20,000-80,000 rapes of female civilians took place, their ages ranging from infants to the elderly. Hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians were massacred in just that event alone.
Here's a list of several other massacres and war crimes the Japanese perpetrated on civilians, prisoners of war, and their own:

Japanese believed in death before surrender. On "Death Island" in Saipan, Okinawa and other places, Japs killed off their own families before they could suffer the shame of being captured by Allied forces.

Now, to go back to your initial point. Knowing what we know of their genocidal, suicidal tendencies pre-American occupation, do you believe Japan would NOT have used nukes on us the moment they had the capabilities, regardless if we had retaliatory nuke ability?
