That was calculated too because they knew his mind was slipping even back then. Every time he set foot outside his polls dropped like a rock. Keeping him hidden let them focus purely on how "bad" Trump was. But we also needed it. Even with that cynical strategy to place him in the white house, they needed to cheat a LOT to win. To the tune of 15 million votes.
